Why should kids talk when they can IM?

When I was a kid, being “social” meant to engage in face-to-face conversation, poker, board games and Sunday dinner.  Mom had to drag us into the house for bedtime and there wasn’t an inch of our neighborhood that we hadn’t explored.

Now? Advances in technology have brought social tools like twitter and Facebook to get us connected.  I’m hooked too.

But have we really advanced?

  • The PlayStation allows my son to visit his older cousin online.  They can spend endless hours playing shooting games together, talking smack to newbies, and killing people.
  • The DS allows kids to sit right next to each other, play an entire game together, and never have to say a word to each other.
  • Facebook allows me to see what’s going on in the lives of my old friends.  I can stalk their pages, see what their kids look like, reminisce of the good old days, and never have to say a word to them.
  • Twitter allows me to have casual conversation with a bunch of strangers, and since we’re limited to 140 characters, we always will be strangers.
Admittedly, I’m a “Social” tool addict.  But I wouldn’t be upset if we replaced it all with good-old Sunday dinner, pen pals and town picnics.
How social are you?
Thanks for stopping by.
Please support me with your honesty.

  1. I'm a "social" tool addict, too. There are times I long for the days before, but enjoy embracing where we are and the blessing social media can be in our lives. We're blessed to have friends all over the world and it warms our hearts to be able to stay in real-time contact with them, see pictures of their growing families as well as rejoice and mourn along with them.
    Thank you for your post!
    Have a blessed Monday...

  2. I have to say, I'm thankful for all the technology. I'm old enough to remember a time before email was popular, and people kept contact but not as much. Now I'm in New York and I can iMessage my sister in India in real time. It's so easy to be close while being far away because of technology.
When you go online on reddit, you see people asking for help with life situations. It warms my heart to see the responses that pour in with affection, help, and sometimes just a listening ear.
I think, people share among strangers things that they're unable to say to people they know.

  3. Oh, we have gone round and round with this discussion over the years. I love the technilogical advances in communication, but with great power comes great responsibility, right? I have allowed my kids to flourish with the technology of the time and in turn, they have taught me how to use each new advance. We have learned together, which helps us stay so connected. When my daughter was a teenager, we would sit on the couch, next to each other, and text each other. We had great fun using this tool to grow closer. It never replaced getting together with friends and family which is why it never got in the way of good communication.

  6. I use all the social media and texting too. My husband is into electronics even more than me, and my 3 year old can work an iPhone by herself lol. I miss the days when things were simpler though. I never even had a cell phone until I was 18, and I spent all my days as a child playing outside. Sometimes I think my daughter is missing out, growing up in the age of technology.

    1. Yeah.. .I work in technology, so when I'm done work I really wish I could shut the computers off. But I am the biggest offender in the house! I have 7 computers, 3 twitter accounts and my never-quite iPhone. Wish I could go to a ranch with no electricity :-)
